Alhambra Jail is one of the most fascinating structures in California, known for its historical significance and the role it played in the justice system. It has been standing for over a century, located in a peaceful and picturesque setting. What makes it unique is not only the ambiance of the building but the intriguing history behind it. As someone who had the opportunity to visit the jail, I am excited to share my experience with you. Come, join me in discovering the secrets of Alhambra Jail.

Located In The Heart of The City

Alhambra Jail is located in the heart of the city, surrounded by shops, markets, and apartments. The building is a Victorian-style masterpiece that was built in 1924. As you walk through the gates, you’ll be immediately transported into a different era. The façade of the building is beautifully decorated with old-fashioned fixtures, wrought iron, and intricate details. It feels like you’ve stepped into a time machine.

Inside The Alhambra Jail Jail

Inside, the jail is well-preserved and kept to the original condition. There are cells of different sizes meant to hold people for different amounts of time. The cells are small, and it is easy to imagine how it must have felt to be locked in one of them. There are also bunk beds, benches, and toilets in each cell, providing inmates with basic necessities. It’s almost as if time stopped once someone was locked up in Alhambra Jail.

Alhambra Jail Was Once A Courthouse

As you make your way through the jail, you’ll come across the sheriff’s office, complete with filing cabinets and old-fashioned typewriters. There is also a courtroom where cases were heard and judgments were made. It’s interesting to note that back then, Alhambra Jail was not just a jail, but a courthouse as well. The court still holds some of the original woodwork, and the judge’s bench and jury box are still in place.

The most mesmerizing part of the building is the exercise yard, located at the back of the jail. It’s a small area with high walls covered in vines, and it’s easy to imagine inmates getting fresh air and sunlight when they were brought here. Today, the yard is empty, but the walls and the concrete floor show the wear and tear of the thousands of pairs of feet that have walked on them.
