After a COVID-19-related push to drop Los Angeles County’s jail population to prevent the spread of the virus, the amount of prisoners has grown, according to a report from 2020 to 2022.
The resurgence in population partly results from restrictions on transfers during the pandemic, leaving thousands in limbo awaiting relocation to state prisons or hospitals. Approximately 2,200 inmates and staff were impacted by an outbreak in 2020 that originated from 121 inmates at Chino State Prison.
The county jail population has again exceeded the state capacity of 12,404. Booking rates have surged, particularly at the Men’s Central Jail, which now houses about one-third of the county's jail inmates.
Understanding Bail Bonds Options
Many inmates are unaware that they can use a bail bondsman to facilitate their release. A bail bondsman provides a financial guarantee to the court that the defendant will appear for all scheduled court appearances in exchange for a fee, typically 10% of the bail amount. This option can be a lifeline for those unable to afford the full bail amount.
